How To Easily Teach Your Puppy Fetch And Have Fun Doing It!

If you’re looking for a way to bond with your furry friend and give them something fun to do, why not teach your puppy fetch? It’s a great way to get your pup active and can also make it easier for you to exercise them. In this article, we'll explain how to easily teach your puppy fetch and have fun doing it!

Introduction

Puppies are born to fetch, some breeds more than others. It's in their nature to want to chase and retrieve things. Fetch is a great game for you and your puppy to play together, and it's a great way to bond with your new furry friend.

Teaching your puppy to fetch is easy, and it's a lot of fun! Here are some tips on how to get started:

1. Choose the right toy. Your puppy should be able to easily pick up and carry the toy you're using for fetch. A soft rubber ball or a small cloth stuffie or small stuffed animal.

2. Get your puppy's attention. As with any training, you'll need to get your puppy's attention before you can start teaching him anything. Once he's looking at you, place the toy directly in the line of sight between his and your eyes.

3. Drop the toy in front of her and if she moved toward it at all, reward that! Give her a treat, pick up the toy and repeat.

4. As your puppy understands that it is good to pick up the toy, slowly increase the distance you toss it. Remember, if you throw it too far too early and the puppy doesn't go get it then you have gone too far. It's important to stop the session without going too far.

5. Once your puppy is bringing the toy back to you, you can incorporate the word "fetch" into the session.

6. As your puppy returns the toy to you, have a treat ready. As she approaches put the treat to her nose, when she opens to let the toy go say "drop:" as her mouth opens, take the toy and give her a treat. This also teaches the drop command at the same time.

Preparing for Fetch Training

The best way to prepare your puppy for fetch training is to start by teaching them basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. Once your puppy has a good understanding of these commands, you can begin working on teaching them how to fetch. You will also want to make sure that there is plenty of space for your puppy to run and play.

If at any point during training your puppy seems confused or frustrated, take a break and try again later. The most important thing is to keep training sessions short and fun for both you and your pup!

Introducing the Toy

Your puppy is going to love playing fetch! It's a great way to burn off some energy and have some fun. Here's how to get started:

1. Choose the right toy. Something that is easy to grip and not too small or fragile. A tennis ball is a good option.

2. Show your puppy the toy and let them sniff it and explore it.

3. Start by rolling or tossing the toy a short distance. As your puppy gets the hang of it, you can start throwing it further.

4. When your puppy brings the toy back to you, praise them and give them a treat.

5. Keep the sessions short at first, about 5 minutes or so. You can gradually increase the time as your puppy gets more comfortable with the game.

Advanced Fetch Games and Tricks

If you're looking for ways to take your puppy's fetch game to the next level, there are plenty of advanced fetch games and tricks you can teach them. When beginning, keep the toy in their line of sight and toss it in front of them where they can see it. As your puppy becomes a better and better fetcher, you can toss the object to an area where they can't see the throw but can see the toy, and then you can simply place the object in a spot in the house and ask them to fetch it. This latter one you also have to teach them what it is yhou want them to fetch (for example "fetch my keys!") Here are a few of our favorites:

2. Fetch with different objects - mix things up by having your pup fetch different objects like sticks, fetching dummies, or even balls of different sizes. This will help keep them guessing and improve their problem-solving skills.

3. Fetch relay race - this is a fun game to play with multiple dogs (or people). Line up your pups (or teams of people) at one end of the room or yard, then have someone at the other end toss a ball or toy for them to fetch. The first team to return the object wins!

4. Hide and seek fetch - this is a great way to tire out an energetic pup. Have them sit and stay while you hide somewhere in the house or yard with their favorite toy or ball. Once you're hidden, call them over and let them find you so you can start a game of fetch!

5. Trick training - teaching your pup tricks is not only fun, but it's also a great
