Acclimating to Their New Home
Once you get your puppy to their new home they will have a great deal of new smells, sights and sounds to process. Things like the smell of your cooking, your cologne or your spouses’ cologne, different floor surfaces such as tile, carpeting, hardwood or other flooring, outside traffic and many other things are all new for your puppy to learn about.
It is important that during this transition time they feel safe with all of the new things surrounding them. Let them explore on their own time. Don’t force them into any new situation. For example, a new puppy may be cautious about crossing from the tile in your kitchen floor to the carpet in your living room. Let them see for themselves that they are safe in walking into the new room. Use only positive tone in your voice and encouragement.
It is common for some puppies to eat very little during the transition to the new home. Some experience more stress than others. Don’t worry though, after a day or two your puppy should be exploring its new area with confidence.
