Jumping Up & Impulse Control

Off

Jumping up on people can also be a common problem requiring training. Just like other unwanted behaviours, jumping up on someone is not to be tolerated. Each time that you allow your dog to jump up on someone or onto you, you teach her that is a desired behaviour and it actually reinforces her jumping up on people.

A key to teaching this is to have already taught your dog to sit/stay. If you have done this it will make it easier for you to address the jumping up. So as your dog gets ready to jump up, and yes you will have to pay close attention to her as you will see her posture and her eyes change a bit as she begins to crouch. As she gets ready to jump you put your hand out like you are telling her to stop by showing her the palm of your hand and use a no command, followed by a sit command. Once the dog sits, reward her with kibble and praise.

Each time she attempts a jump up on someone, this must be repeated. If you can catch your dog before they actually jump your dog never gets the signal that it is good to jump up on people. This is why it’s important for you to give your dog all of your attention when guests come over. As they knock and come into your home, be sure you are focusing on your dog (dominating it). In the event she begins to posture for a jump up onto someone, intervene and correct her. Leash her in the beginning if necessary.

In all fairness, the guests also need to be told that you are training your dog not to jump up and they need to understand the no, sit, stay, reward series of commands. They also must refrain from playing with the dog or giving it any kind of attention if it does jump on them. All humans must be on the same page of not rewarding the dog in any way if it jumps up and that includes giving the dog attention by looking at it, touching it or talking to it.
