Down
With your puppy in front of you hold the kibble to activate their sense of smell. Ask them to sit and once they do, move the kibble to the ground as to lure them downward. Once the puppy lies down say “down” and reward them with the kibble. If your puppy first sits and then stands instead of going down, return them to the sit position and repeat luring them down from there once more.
Remember to only say the command once and then wait for the compliance so that you are training them to respond on the first command not subsequent ones. For the first few times, no verbal “down” is needed since they don’t understand English at that point. Begin using the verbal “down” command after they lie down. This will help to strengthen the meaning of the word as it will only have been said when the dog is going down and not in the beginning when they aren’t moving.
As your puppy gets good at the down by luring them with the kibble, maybe 5-6 days depending on your puppy’s focus, you remove the luring with the kibble and simply issue the command sit, and then down while your puppy is making eye contact with you. Mark and reward right away if they lie down. The final step is to remove the sit command and simply issue the down command once your dog is ready for it. Depending on your dog this could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
