Puppy Training Help for Biting, Potty Accidents & More

Puppy Training Help: What to Do When Everything Feels Difficult

You love your puppy.

You may also be wondering why nobody warned you how exhausting puppies can be.

Biting.

Accidents.

Chewing.

Crying in the crate.

Jumping.

Pulling on the leash.

Ignoring you the second something interesting appears.

These problems can make people feel as though they are failing at puppy training.

Usually, that is not what is happening.

Your puppy is learning how the human world works.

Stop trying to fix everything at once

When five things are going wrong, people often start changing five things at the same time.

That creates confusion for both the puppy and the owner.

Choose one behavior.

Decide what you want the puppy to do instead.

Then make that behavior easy to practice and worth repeating.

If your puppy jumps, teach and reward four paws on the floor.

If your puppy steals objects, work on trading and Drop It.

If your puppy pulls, reinforce walking near you before expecting a long neighborhood walk.

Training becomes clearer when the goal is specific.

Puppy biting is usually not an obedience problem

Puppies explore with their mouths.

Biting often becomes worse when a puppy is tired, overstimulated, teething or excited.

Keep appropriate toys close by.

Redirect biting toward acceptable items.

Reward calmer interaction.

If the puppy becomes increasingly wild, it may be time for a break rather than another training exercise.

Toilet training requires management

Toilet training becomes frustrating when owners expect a puppy to tell them what to do before the puppy understands the routine.

Take your puppy outside predictably.

Reward successful outdoor toileting.

Supervise carefully indoors.

Watch for patterns.

Accidents are information. They can tell you that the schedule, supervision or timing needs to change.

Progress is rarely perfectly straight

One good week does not mean training is finished.

One bad day does not mean training failed.

Puppies grow quickly. Their attention, confidence, energy and behavior can change as they develop.

What matters is the overall direction.

Ask yourself:

Is recovery getting faster?

Are good behaviors happening more often?

Does the puppy understand the exercise more quickly?

Are you needing fewer prompts?

Those are meaningful signs of progress.

Use a training plan instead of random advice

The internet contains thousands of puppy-training opinions.

That can create a new problem: information overload.

You read one method on Monday, another on Tuesday and watch a completely different video on Wednesday.

Consistency disappears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my puppy seem to forget their training?

Puppies often perform differently when the environment, distraction level or excitement changes. Skills need practice in different situations.

How long should puppy training sessions be?

Short sessions are usually best. Several brief successful sessions can be more productive than one long frustrating session.

Why is my puppy worse at night?

Many puppies become mouthier and more excitable when tired. Rest, appropriate chewing and calmer activities may help.
